Ten Facts About Mold You Need To Know!
Mold Fact #1: Mold Needs Less Than 48 Hours To Begin Growing!

Mold Fact #1: Mold Needs Less Than 48 Hours To Begin Growing!
Mold requires three key ingredients to grow:
1.      Food: wood & wood products; paper and other paper products like cardboard and wallpaper; leather; fabric and upholstery; grout; painted walls; cement; plaster (drywall); ceiling tiles; insulation materials; and carpet.
2.      The ideal temperature of 41 degrees to 100 degrees Fahrenheit; and
3.      Moisture, the key ingredient.
In the presence of moisture, the ideal temperature, and ample food, mold will begin growing within 24 to 48 hours. This is the reason that water damage restoration is so important during a flood event!
Mold Fact #2: Mold Causes Chronic Sinusitis!

Mold Fact #2: Mold Causes Chronic Sinusitis!
According to Doctors at the Mayo Clinic, David Sherris, Eugene Kern, and Jens Ponikau, chronic sinusitis is caused by a fungus and is an immune reaction:
“Medications haven’t worked for chronic sinusitis because we didn’t know what the cause of the problem was. Fungus allergy was thought to be involved in less than ten percent of cases. Our studies indicate that, in fact, fungus is likely the cause of nearly all of these problems. And it is not an allergic reaction, but an immune reaction. This is a potential breakthrough that offers great hope for the millions of people who suffer from this problem. We can now begin to treat the cause of the problem instead of the symptoms. Finally we are on the trail of a treatment that may actually work.”
This conclusion was based on a research study of 210 patients with chronic sinusitis. The Doctors collected mucus samples from the patients’ noses and discovered fungus in 96 percent of the patients. In addition, they identified 40 different kinds of fungi, averaging out to 2.7 types per patient.
Further research was done on 101 of these patients by removing nasal polyps. What they found were eosiniphils, which are which blood cells activated by the immune system in the nasal tissue of the patients. The Doctors believe that this discovery shows that the body’s immune system is sending the eosinophils to attack the fungi which is what is causing the irritation and inflammation of the membranes of the nose. For this reason, they do not believe that traditional treatments work because they do not address the root cause of the problem, fungi, which will continue to irritate the nose membranes.
Mold Fact #3: Your Home Provides Food For Mold!

Mold Fact #3: Your Home Provides Food For Mold!
Mold is nature’s recycler, its main purpose in our eco-system is to break down dead organic material.
In the outdoors, the relative number of spores is small enough not to cause significant harmful health effects for most people.
However, indoors, once mold begins to grow, it will cause health concerns because the spore counts will increase. Indoor air quality is a critical concern, because 90% of our time is spent indoors.
The problem with mold is the fact that most homes are made out of the material that it loves to eat. A home is an “all you can eat buffet” for mold because homes are constructed using dead organic materials: wood & wood products; paper and other paper products like cardboard and wallpaper; leather; fabric and upholstery; grout; painted walls; cement; plaster (drywall); ceiling tiles; insulation materials; and carpet.

Mold Fact #4: Studies Show A Strong Link Between Mold and Asthma!

Mold Fact #4: Studies Show A Strong Link Between Mold and Asthma!
“Infants who are exposed to mold in their living environments have nearly a three times greater risk of becoming asthmatic than those who did not have extensive mold exposure in their first year of life.” (Medical Evidence that Connects Mold Exposure to Illness Keeps Piling Up)
According to Medical News Today, asthma affects 300 million people in the world and more than 22 million Americans. Although people of all ages suffer from the disease, it most often starts in childhood, currently affecting 6 million children in the US. Asthma kills about 255,000 people worldwide every year.
Asthma is a respiratory condition marked by spasms in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing. According to WebMD, no one really knows what causes asthma, but what is known is that it is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways. Trigger and causes of asthma include allergies, tobacco smoke, environmental factors, obesity, genetics, and other factors.

Mold Fact #5: Mold Grows Undetected!

Mold Fact #5: Mold Grows Undetected!
Most people do not realize they have a mold problem because it is hidden.
Mold can be detected through smell, visual clues, and knowledge of the building history, i.e., was there a flood or indoor leak?
One of the first signs that you have a mold problem will be a “musty” or “mildew” odor.
The next step is to determine where the smell is coming from.
The seven areas of the home that you will likely find mold includes the following: bathrooms and kitchen that have leaks under the sink; leaks behind appliances (refrigerator, dishwater, and washing machine); ceilings and walls where there are water leaks; window sills and around the windows where condensation accumulates; your basement; closets; and crawl spaces.

Mold Fact #6: Building Practices Promote Mold Growth!

Mold Fact #6: Building Practices Promote Mold Growth!
The rush to make quick money and high profits by real estate developers has created a disaster waiting to happen because new homes built today are more susceptible to mold growth.
1.      The quest to reduce energy bills means that many new homes are air tight and lack proper ventilation, conducive to mold growth.
2.      The season that the home was built is also a factor. For instance, if the home was built during a period when there was lots of rain and the foundation was not allowed to completely dry before installing the insulation and vapor barrier, then moisture could be trapped behind the walls.
3.      Building practices have changed. In the past, most homes were built with non-porous materials like plywood and timber which made it difficult for mold to penetrate the surface. Today, cost conscious builders use Orient Strand Board (OSB) and particle board which are porous and susceptible to mold growth.
According to the MOLDY documentary, at least 50 percent of homes in the United States have water damage issues caused by water line leaks, tears in moisture vapor barriers, leaky showers, condensation under eaves, and water pooling in crawl spaces. It is this water damage which causes mold to grow.
Improving building practices to prevent moisture issues is the single most effective way to prevent mold.
Mold Fact #7: 1 in 4 People Are Susceptible To Mold Illness!

Mold Fact #7: 1 in 4 People Are Susceptible To Mold Illness!
According to Dr. Richie Shoemaker, physician and expert in the field of biotoxin-related illness and author of the book Surviving Mold, 1 in 4 people have a genetic pre-disposition to the mold illness, Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS):
“Genes made them prime targets for an assault by their own innate immune systems….exposure to the interior environment of a Water-Damaged Building (WDB), [causes] an innate immune response that is going haywire.”
Individuals exposed to the toxins in a water damaged building suffer from chronic illness because their bodies are trying to eliminate the foreign substances that stay in the body resulting in chronic inflammation and multiple symptoms.
It is difficult to diagnose CIRS because there are 37 symptoms patients could suffer from: fatigue; weakness; aches; muscle cramps; unusual pain; ice pick pain; headache; light sensitivity; red eyes; blurred vision; tearing; sinus problems; cough; shortness of breath; abdominal pain; diarrhea; joint pain; morning stiffness; memory issues; focus/concentration issues; word recollection issues; decreased learning of new knowledge; confusion; disorientation; skin sensitivity; mood swings; appetite swings; sweats (especially night sweats); temperature regulation or dysregulation problems; excessive thirst; increased urination; static shocks; numbness; tingling; vertigo; metallic taste; and tremors.
Mold Fact #8: Mold Reduces Property Values!

Mold Fact #8: Mold Reduces Property Values!
“Mold is a serious issue. If you leave it untreated, it continues to grow. It leads to respiratory illness and it rots the wood, leaving the property valueless.” (Ian Schlake of Respond and Rebuild)
Like a parasite or cancer, mold will continue to grow as long as there is a food source, moisture, and the right temperature.
The only way to stop mold is to address the moisture source to prevent future mold growth and then remove the contaminated porous materials. Effective, long lasting mold remediation is based upon identifying the source of contamination and ensuring it is fixed.
Failing to fix the underlying causes of the mold and effectively removing the mold will lead to reduced property values caused by structural damage as the mold continues to feed on the home.

Mold Fact #9: Professional Mold Removal Can Be Expensive!

Mold Fact #9: Professional Mold Removal Can Be Expensive!
As mentioned in an earlier article, the cost of mold remediation will depend on three key factors:
1.      How much of the area is infected with mold?
2.      What kind of materials are infected?
3.      How easy is it to access the mold?
On average, the typical household mold removal project will range from $2,000 to $6,000, but can be as high as $30,000 or more depending on the extent of contamination.
The core problem with the mold remediation industry is any contractor can offer mold removal services…so it is truly “Buyer Beware.” Because of the lack of regulation, many contractors believe they can offer mold removal services without the proper training or experience. To stay competitive, these contractors may offer “quick fix” solutions that focusing on killing the mold. However, as stated by Michael Pinto:
“Killing mold, but leaving the residue in place, is not acceptable. Since many health impacts can be triggered by exposure to both live and dead mold spores, the source and secondary contamination must be removed.” (MOLD INDOORS: Killing it is not Enough)
Killing mold is not the answer because it is not a permanent solution to a mold problem. Professional mold removal contractors will follow an eight step process to ensure that your mold problem is fixed properly and will back up their work with a guarantee.
Don’t pinch pennies when you encounter a mold problem, the cheapest estimate may not necessarily be the best one. Do your due diligence, ask questions, get references, and most importantly avoid contractors that offer you magical solutions that involve just spraying a chemical to kill the mold dead.
Mold Fact #10: Mold Sickness Is An Epidemic Most People Are Unaware Of!

Mold Fact #10: Mold Sickness Is An Epidemic Most People Are Unaware Of!
According to the producers of the MOLDY documentary released earlier in 2015, most Physicians do not understand or have the knowledge to properly diagnose patients with mold sickness:
“Possibly every doctor in the United States is treating mold illness, and they just don’t realize it.” (Dr. Scott McMahon, MD)
Since most physicians are not trained to treat and identify mold illness, their patients continue to suffer in silence, mis-diagnosis, and a vicious cycle of numerous visits to different doctors and specialists that do not understand why they are sick.
Considering the statistics revealed in the MOLDY documentary it is not surprising that mold sickness is now considered a hidden epidemic.
1.      At least 45 million buildings in the United States have unhealthy levels of mold.
You have a 33% chance of being exposed to toxic mold when you move into a new home, apartment or office. The documentary also emphasizes the fact that many foods are contaminated with mold, including corn, peanuts, and coffee.
2.      Approximately 28 percent of the population have genes that make them highly susceptible to mold-related health issues.
3.      Despite the fact that mold is a significant health concern, like lead and asbestos, there are no federal environmental protections laws.
Mold is a hidden epidemic because it makes people sick and they do not know that mold is the cause!

Mold Removal 773-885-8528

The purpose of this article is to explain how and why mold could be the reason why some people are misdiagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS IS AN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE
The body’s nerves are protected by an insulating coating around the nerve cells called the myelin sheath. Myelin is a fatty substance that insulates the nerves, helping them send electrical signals that control movement, speech, and other functions.
Multiple Sclerosis Is an Autoimmune Disease (Image courtesy of Web MD)
MS is caused by the degeneration of the myelin sheath. When this occurs, nerve messages are not transmitted properly.
In layman’s terms, MS is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. It is referred to as an autoimmune disease because MS causes the body to attack the myelin sheath.
The term “sclerosis” refers to scarring because patients with MS develop multiple areas of scar tissue where their nerves are damaged.
Since MS is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, it affects the patient’s brain, spinal cord and the eyes’ optic nerves resulting in problems with muscle control, balance, vision, or speech.
THREE THEORIES OF WHY MS OCCURS
The exact cause of MS is not known. However there are several theories:
1.    Genetics
2.    Viruses
3.    Climate, Geography, and Environment
#1 GENETICS
Some researchers believe that genetics are a factor:
1.    15 percent of individuals with MS have one or more family members or relatives who also have MS.
2.    In cases of identical twins, there is a 33% chance for each sibling to have the disease.
Research on the genetic link, however, is not conclusive and has not yet proven that this is an inherited disorder, meaning that if one of your relatives has MS you will not necessarily get it.
#2 VIRUSES
Another theory about MS is that if someone has a genetic predisposition to MS, viruses could trigger the disease. This is the reason, researchers are studying the relationship between MS and infections such as Epstein-Barr, herpes, and varicella-zoster.
Some researchers also believe that people with other autoimmune diseases like type 1 diabetes, thyroid disease, or inflammatory bowel disease, are at a slightly increased risk of developing MS.
#3 CLIMATE, GEOGRAPHY, AND ENVIRONMENT
WHAT IS GOING ON HERE IS SOMETHING PRESUMABLY THAT IS PREVENTABLE….WE JUST NEED TO FIND OUT WHAT IT IS IN THE ENVIRONMENT. BECAUSE IT HAS TO BE IN THE ENVIRONMENT: YOUR GENES DON’T CHANGE OVER TWO GENERATIONS, THREE GENERATIONS. (GEORGE EBERS, A PROFESSOR OF NEUROLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD, COMMENTING ON HIS STUDY ON THE RISING INCIDENCE OF WOMEN WITH MS)
Research on the environmental causes of MS is growing primarily because the incidence of MS is significantly higher in colder climates, common in Europe, the United States, and Canada compared to people living in Asia and the tropics.
New Zealand and parts of Australia also have higher rates of MS, but these are relatively temperate climates. For this reason, some researchers believe that cases of MS increase in incidence and prevalence farther from the equator (or in higher latitudes).
MS could be higher in colder climates because of Vitamin D deficiencies. Vitamin D is naturally produced by the body in response to sunlight.
People living in colder climates, like Canada, spend more time indoors because of the cold weather, getting less sunlight.
Researchers speculate that this leads to vitamin D deficiencies, weakening the immune system, increasing the risk of getting MS.
Another possible explanation for the higher prevalence of MS in colder climates could be mold because people in colder climates spend more time indoors, making them more susceptible to illnesses caused by indoor air quality issues.
MOLD SICKNESS COULD BE THE CAUSE OF MS SYMPTOMS
“THREE OUT OF FOUR AMERICANS WHO NATURALLY PRODUCE ANTIBODIES TO MOLD TOXINS CAN LIVE AND WORK IN WATER-DAMAGED BUILDINGS WITHOUT SUFFERING SIGNIFICANT DEMISE IN THEIR HEALTH. BUT PATIENTS WHO CARRY THE HLA GENE HAVE NO ANTIBODIES TO DEACTIVATE AND REMOVE MOLD TOXINS. THEY DEVELOP EXCESSIVE ACCUMULATION OF THESE HARMFUL TOXINS. MOLD TOXINS ARE LIPOPHILIC, MEANING THEIR MOLECULAR STRUCTURE CONSISTS OF FATTY ACID MOLECULES. FOR THIS REASON, MOLD TOXINS MIGRATE TO AND DEPOSIT IN THE BRAIN BECAUSE THE BRAIN IS THE ‘FATTIEST’ ORGAN, CONSISTING OF 60% FAT….MOLD TOXINS DESTROY THE MYELIN SHEATH ON BRAIN NEURONS, CAUSING THE CLASSIC WHITE SPOTS SEEN IN MS. “(DR. RICK SPONAUGLE OF THE FLORIDA DETOX & WELLNESS INSTITUTE)
As stated earlier, MS is caused by the degeneration of the myelin sheath. The current theory: MS is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease of the central nervous system because the body attacks the myelin sheath. Symptoms of MS include the following:
1.    fatigue
2.    vision problems
3.    tingling and numbness
4.    vertigo and dizziness
5.    muscle weakness and spasms
6.    problems with balance and coordination
7.    speech and swallowing problems
8.    cognitive dysfunction
9.    difficulty with walking
10.  bladder and bowel dysfunction
11.  sexual dysfunction
12.  mood swings, depression
Similarly, individuals with a genetic susceptibility to mold illness that suffer from CIRS, have many of the same symptoms exhibited by those suffering from MS.
1.    Problems with thinking, concentration, memory and judgment
2.    Difficulty speaking and slurred speech
3.    Eye problems
4.    Extreme and chronic fatigue
5.    Dizziness and loss of balance and coordination
6.    Feelings of tingling or numbness in legs and arms
7.    Muscle tremors
8.    Loss of arm, hand or leg strength
Long term exposure to Stachybotrys or Chaetomium, can destroy the myelin sheath that causes many of the same symptoms that MS victims have.
There is no cure for MS and much of the treatment focuses on the use of medications. Considering the similarity in symptoms exhibited by MS patients and those suffering from toxic mold and the fact that mold can also destroy the myelin sheath, the key question that must be answered:
WHAT PERCENTAGE OF THOSE DIAGNOSED WITH MS ARE ACTUALLY SUFFERING FROM TOXIC MOLD EXPOSURE?
Considering the potential implications of this question and the long term health costs of treating MS to just control it, it makes logical sense for anyone diagnosed with MS to seriously investigate the indoor air quality of their home and work place.  Getting the professional help of a mold remediation and/or mold removal company is fortuitous.
If mold is found, then find out if you have a genetic susceptibility to mold illness and seek proper treatment to detox your body and properly remediate your home to restore the fungal ecology to healthy levels.

Mold Contamination, Mold Removal, Mold Remediation 773-885-8528

Are you having a problem with mold or mildew in your home or commercial property?
Many people will panic when the word “mold” is mentioned but are OK if “mildew” is present. Little do people know that there is no difference between Mold and Mildew.  Online you may find statements like “Mildew is distinguished from its closely related counterpart, mold, largely by its color: molds appear in shades of black, blue, red, and green, whereas mildew is white.” This statement is misleading because some molds are also white.
The authoritative Ainsworth & Bisby’s Dictionary of the Fungi has the following definitions for mold and mildew.
Mold: (also spelled as mould):
A micro-fungus having a well-marked mycelium or spore mass, especially an economically important saprobe.
Mildew:
1.      A plant disease in which the pathogen is seen as a growth on the surface of the host.
2.      The staining, and frequently the breaking up, of cloth and fibers, paint, etc., by fungi and bacteria.
3.      A fungus causing 1 or 2.
From these definitions it is clear that what we see in our homes or our commercial property is mold. Secondly both mold and mildew are fungi and the only difference between mildew and mold is that the former is found growing on plants as a pathogen while the latter is found growing on building materials and other dead organic materials as a saprobe. In fact some fungi are able to grow on both living hosts (plants) and also on dead organic material.
Why Do Mold (Mildew) Grow in Your Home?
Mold or mildew if you like develop from minute structures (“seeds”) called spores.  These mold spores are everywhere including in our homes. You will find them in dust on carpet, window frames, furniture, walls, ceiling, etc. These spores may not be in large amounts to cause any health problem. The problem comes if your home has water damage due to:
When the spores are dry in the dust they are dormant but once they get wet mold develop within 24-48 hours. The mold continues to grow unless steps are taken to eliminate the source of moisture, and effectively deal with the mold problem. It is when mold grows in your house, hotel, commercial property, industrial building due to moisture that you, your family or employees are at risk of mold exposure.

What to do if you have Mold (Mildew) in Your Home, or Commercial Property.
If you suspect you have mold in your home, or commercial property, do not panic. Contact a qualified mold remediation company that can assess the extent of mold contamination and recommend the most appropriate way to remove it and to fix the moisture problem. Do not attempt to remove the mold yourself if you don’t know what you are dealing with or if you don’t have the right tools to deal with the mold.  The CleanUP Guys is an industry leader in the Chicago area and suburbs for mold removal, mold remediation, mold decontamination services.

Mold Removal and Mold Remediation 773-885-8528

WHO IS AT RISK FROM MOLD

Who is at risk from mold? Virtually anyone who lives or works in the building where mold growth is occurring. It can be serious or it can be mild, but some of the more dangerous molds and toxins can affect pretty much everyone at some level or another. Mold symptoms can range from the milder allergic reactions and fatigue to stronger problems such as respiratory based illnesses.

The five most common symptoms related to mold include:

  1. -          Nasal and sinus congestion
  2. -          Wheezing and breathing difficulty
  3. -          Skin and / or eye irritation
  4. -          Coughing and / or sneezing
  5. -          Respiratory infections

Mold can have an adverse effect even on folks who are otherwise extremely healthy, but the most common types of susceptibility to mold include those with respiratory disorders such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, those with weakened immune systems due to cancer or HIV, or babies and / or elderly. Not that this is a limited list…anyone can be affected by mold if they are vulnerable to the toxins present in the mold infesting their home or place of business.

Young children may be the most at risk group when it comes to mold, since their immune systems have not yet matured and mold exposure can cause serious and long lasting damage. Continuous exposure to mycotoxins found in mold can result in severe pulmonary hemorrhaging, or bleeding in the lungs.

While most molds are harmless, you don’t want to take chances with your family’s health. At the first sign of mold, call in your local, professional mold removal and remediation experts. They will be able to determine the level of your mold threat as well as devise a plan for dealing with it quickly and efficiently.

If necessary, mold remediation should be administered as soon as possible.  Which means cordoning off areas of the home or business from the infected areas of space.  This alleviates the spread of the mold spores from one area to the next, compromising the air quality overall in your place.  Especially is this the case in dealing with attic mold, crawlspace mold or mold behind walls.

Mold Removal Vs Mold Remediation

If your home has a mold problem, then you definitely want to get rid of it. That much is a given. Mold is a green, black, sometimes yellowish fuzzy growth on walls, flooring, piping, etc., usually accompanied by a noxious smell. And while not all molds are actively dangerous, they are unpleasant and should be dealt with promptly.

Unfortunately, far too many people think that mold removal is all that is required, and of course there are any number of companies out there who advertise using the phrase “mold removal” and who will come in an eliminate the mold from your home.  Sounds easy enough, right?  Wrong. On every count.

You have to remember that mold is the byproduct, the after effect, of a much larger problem. Usually this is water damage, but mold can also be linked to fires and even something as seemingly innocuous as increased humidity.  Unless that original problem is properly addressed, then by removing the mold, all you are doing is putting off the problem temporarily.  Mold removal is useless if the environment that is favorable to the mold growth is allowed to remain.

This is where mold remediation comes in. By remediation, we mean not just the removal of the mold growth itself, but active and thorough treatment of the affected area in order to make sure you don’t find yourself with another mold problem down the road.

The mold remediation process is twofold….one you have to eliminate the existing mold growth, and do so without causing it to spread to other areas of the home. This is done by sealing off the affected area and using specialized gear and techniques to safely remove the growth and dispose of it.
The second step, and the most important one, is to properly treat the area, as well as the problem that caused the mold in the first place. This includes repairing and restoration of any and all water damage problems in and around the home, disinfecting and sanitizing the area where the mold grew, increasing ventilation throughout said area, and bringing down relative humidity levels to within acceptable parameters, usually between 40-45%.

This second step is absolutely vital when it comes to a successful mold remediation project. Any company that you consider hiring should be able to describe this step to you in detail. If their only plan of action is to cleanup the mold, then run. Run like a river when the snow melts, and hire a qualified, experienced moldremediation professional (and for the record, that would be us, The CleanUp Guys!) to handle all of your mold and water damagerestoration needs.
